The Good News in Luke

The four New Testament gospels are some of the most astonishing eye-witness accounts in the whole of history. Whilst many of us can recall major world events we saw on the news or read about in the newspaper, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John witnessed first-hand the man who has had the biggest ever impact on world history; Jesus Christ.

Luke in particular stands out as a person who didn’t just see and hear Jesus teaching but was also present for the rapid and explosive spread of the gospel of Jesus and The Kingdom of God (or ‘good news’ to use the English phrase which defines the word gospel). His gospel writing records the life of Jesus and the book of The Acts of the Apostles traces the growth of the Christian community throughout the Mediterranean during the 1st Century A.D.

Throughout August we will be taking a look at the words of Luke and seeing how his own personality and character help to tell the story of the life of the Jesus. We’ll look at his familiar telling of the nativity story, how he records how Jesus used the Old Testament to base his teachings, and how Luke himself as a medical doctor describes the seemingly inexplicable healings that Jesus performed.

In our modern world which is littered with misinformation and fake news which must be fact checked at every turn, Luke in his gospel record reveals the truth of salvation through faith and baptism into Jesus. It is a compelling account of the life of the Son of God, written from the perspective of one who saw and believed.

Luke’s gift to all of us is The Greatest Story Ever Told; a story which continues to stand the test of time. Come along any Sunday morning at 10am to see for yourself.
