Prayer

What is Prayer?

Prayer is simply talking to God. It’s not about using special words or following a strict formula – it’s about speaking honestly from the heart.

As Christians, we believe prayer is a way of building a personal relationship with God: sharing our thoughts, giving thanks, asking for help, and seeking guidance.

The Bible shows us that God wants to hear from us, and that we can come to Him at any time, whether in quiet moments alone or as part of a group.

Prayer is an important part of everyday life. We pray to God ‘through’ Jesus Christ, recognising his role as our mediator.

Talking to God helps us grow closer to Him, just like a relationship between a parent and child, and can be an enormous source of comfort and strength.

Tips to help you pray

Here are some simple, practical tips to help you learn how to pray:

1. Just be yourself
You don’t need special or formal words. Talk to God as you would to someone you trust; honestly and naturally.

2. Keep it simple
A helpful pattern is:
• Thank God for what you have
• Say sorry for things you’ve done wrong
• Ask for help or guidance
• Pray for others as well as yourself

3. Pray regularly
Try to make prayer part of your daily routine – morning, evening, or whenever you have a quiet moment. It doesn’t have to be long.

4. Use Jesus as your guide
In the Bible, Jesus gives an example of how to pray (often called the Lord’s Prayer – see Matthew 6:9-13). It can help shape your thoughts and remind you what matters most.

5. Be patient
Prayer is about building a relationship with God, and that takes time. It might not feel very natural straight away, but keep going.

6. Be thankful, not just asking
It’s easy to only pray when we need help, but remembering to say “thank you” helps us see God’s care in everyday life.

7. Find a quiet space
A calm place can help you focus. That said, you can pray anywhere, at any time.
