Who are Christadelphians?

‘Christadelphian’ may sound like an unusual name. It simply means ‘brothers in Christ’ putting two New Testament Greek words for ‘brothers’ & ‘Christ’ together, taken from Colossians 1:2.

It is a name, used for over 170 years, which tries to capture how important our relationship with Jesus Christ and with each other is. As brothers and sisters, we see ourselves as a family based on spiritual values.

Ashby Christadelphian Church is part of both a worldwide church community and has been part of the local community for over 100 years.

Within the wider Christian landscape, Christadelphians are Biblical Unitarians, i.e. we believe in one God who is the Father, whose human son Jesus is the messiah. Our beliefs are taken directly from the Bible and we try really hard to get back to what the first Christians believed and taught. We encourage people to read and discover the Bible for themselves. Its core message of love and forgiveness is remarkably straightforward and accessible.

What do we believe?

• That the Bible is God’s word – it is how He reveals who He is and what He intends for our world and us as individuals
• That God is all-powerful, all-knowing and the Creator of the universe
• That Jesus Christ is His Son
• That we are naturally sinful
• That we need saving from death – this is something only God can do
• That our human nature works against God’s will and consequently we can only be saved by God’s grace and forgiveness
• That the death of Jesus and his subsequent resurrection, because he was a perfect man, are the key to God dealing with the problem of sin and fulfilling all His promises to mankind, if we are willing to say yes to being like Jesus by being baptised
• That Jesus after he rose from the dead ascended to heaven waiting to return to set up a kingdom on earth which will put God at the centre of world affairs
• That when Jesus returns to the earth all those who know of the Good News will be raised from the dead to be judged worthy, or not, of a place in God’s kingdom on earth.
• That we should watch world events carefully so that Jesus’ return does not take us by surprise
