Breaking of Bread Service

Every Sunday at 11:30am

A weekly memorial

Every Sunday at 11:30am, our members meet to worship, pray, and read the Bible as part of a service to remember Jesus. We listen to a short teaching from the Bible (we often use the word ‘exhortation’ rather than sermon, but it is exactly the same idea) before baptised members share a small amount of bread and wine. This is specifically about remembering the amazing things that Jesus did in giving his life on the cross and being raised from the dead by God.

The last supper

Why do we hold a Breaking of Bread service? We do this because Jesus spent the evening before his death with his friends and disciples doing something very similar. They shared a meal during which Jesus took some bread and broke it, sharing pieces with all his disciples at the table. He then took a cup of wine and shared it with everyone there. He said that this was a memorial for his death, and asked them all to continue doing this “in remembrance of him” until he comes again.

Remembering Jesus

Those disciples around the table didn’t understand what Jesus was talking about. However, within 24 hours, Jesus had been crucified, and it looked as though all hope was lost. Thankfully, on the third day, there was a dramatic reversal, as they saw Jesus alive again.

While Jesus was going to go away, his disciples were tasked with proclaiming him as Lord and encouraging Christians to remember him through the ‘Breaking of Bread’ service. It is clear from the Bible that this quickly became a weekly remembrance service on Sundays, which is why we continue to do this many years later.

Join us

You are very welcome to come to our breaking of bread service and join in our hymns, worship songs, prayers, Bible readings, and exhortation. The bread and wine memorial ‘emblems’ are shared among those who have been baptised, just as they were among the early Christians. If you have come to the same faith shared by all Christadelphians and have been baptised in water as a believing adult, you are very welcome to fully participate in our remembrance as part of God’s family in Christ and share the bread and wine with us.

If you are exploring faith, or were baptised as an infant or as part of another church, that is absolutely fine, we would be delighted for you to come along and experience our service. If you are keen to learn and share our faith, we would be very happy to help you in any way we can, most importantly to support you in reaching a point where you wish to be baptised based on understanding and belief in the good news of God’s kingdom and Jesus Christ. We would then warmly welcome you to share fully in all that we do, including the memorial ‘Breaking of Bread’.
